Learning Challenge: How Long to Nap

I looked over a chart about how long one should nap. It was aptly named “How Long to Nap.” Essentially, it went over the different types of napping with respect to time and the expected results. 10-20 minutes is what is called a power nap. This type of napping is best for a quick boost of alertness and energy. I think this only works in short burst however. I have learned this from experience. Some studies suggest that a 30-minute nap can cause something called sleep inertia or something more commonly known as grogginess. I took this opportunity to learn more from a Wikipedia link.  A 60-minute nap, is best for memorization, especially facts, faces and names. The 90-minute sleeping session is the best sleeping type to obtain REM. I knew this from previous classes that I have taken and I have also read a lot of articles for this class about sleep. This type of sleep much be achieved for any kind of dreaming to occur. This leads to better emotional status and more creativity. I would encourage everyone to read this article. I have left a link and added the chart below.

  1. Hey Ruben! I saw this in the blog stream for extra commenting, and I'm definitely a nap person (though I never have time to take naps) so I was curious to learn more. I know I've heard about short naps being better than long naps and all about reaching REM and whatnot, but I like that this chart sums it all up in one image. It's either better to take a short 10-20 minute nap or to nap for an hour and 30 minutes. It all makes sense, but at the same time, sometimes I'm too tired for a short nap and don't have enough time for a full hour and a half.
    Great post!
