Famous Last Words: Week 12

First thing is first, BOOMER SOONER! This weekend hosted an awesome game and hopefully we are back in the playoff picture. Now that that is out of the way, I wanted to make it known that I have officially posted another story, so I hope everyone gets the chance to read it and possibly leave some constructive criticism. If you read my last story, hopefully that will make it more enticing and if you hated my last story, then show some love and help me make this one better!!
Anyway, this has been quite an eventful week. In the last week, I have gotten 4 medical school interview offers. So that is obviously exciting. However, all of the offers are out of state. This means that I have a lot of work to do with planning out my traveling. I’ll be going to both coasts, San Francisco and Philadelphia. In addition, I will be headed up the Midwest to Des Moines and then to the Great Lakes in Ohio. While, I have to all of these states, I have never been to cities before. So, it should be a lot of fun. My first interview is actually next Monday in San Francisco on the day of my fourth histology exam, which makes tough. But since it’s a four thousand level science course and this sort of thing is typical at that level, my professor has been understanding. The rest of my interviews will be scattered throughout the fall and winter.

This means that I will have to do a lot of my writing on the road on a plane or in an airport. But I think I’m up for it. This class is set up in a manner that will allow me to utilize the time I have to contribute from various places.

    CONGRATULATIONS, Ruben: this is so exciting! And San Francisco is BEAUTIFUL (I went to school at Berkeley, and I lived in San Francisco for a while). Enjoy!!! In fact, I lived at Stanyan and Parnassus, which is very near the medical school; it's right by Golden Gate Park. Hopefully you will get a chance to stroll around that beautiful park. I hope you have a great trip!
    If you get a chance, you could go to the Asian Art Museum and see some gorgeous art from India and south Asia. You will recognize the stories from India now! :-)

For this week's Learning Challenge, I read an article about sleeping. The article is entitled Data Reveals How Some College Students Sleep . The article was written with the interest of how sleeping conditions may affect learning. In essence, the study followed the sleeping habits of college students aged from 18-22 and tracked certain conditions. One things they found was students aren't that sleep deprived. The average student in this study clocked in 7 hours and 3 minutes of rest a night. I can honestly say that this was something that was confirmed for me. And if you've ever lived in a fraternity, you would have a really hard time believing it was shy of that number. Something that I learned from this study was that women go to bed and wake up earlier than men. Although, this makes a lot of sense. The two are probably correlated. Feedback Strategies

I really appreciated both articles that I read. The “Differencebetween Praise and Feedback” article was really interesting. I feel like it tackled the issue of parents simply throwing blind compliments at children and instead taking the time to give context their comments. The main takeaway was become more involved and interactive with children. This could be more beneficial than vague praise statements. The other article I read was “Presence Not Praise.” It dealt with the issue of praise possibly being toxic, especially if the praise was simply directed toward accomplishment and not toward the effort. To answer to the questions from the post, I always try to give feedback every time I get the chance, because I know how much I appreciate feedback. It’s an invaluable resource and if it is handled correctly, its boundless potential. However, I feel that being constructive is very important and making sure that your criticism is wanted. Reading Notes: Rama Section C

I really enjoyed this telling of Rama in Rama’s quest. I still think that Rama’s heart is in the right place, but I don’t know how I feel about his fight first and ask questions later attitude. In addition, I really enjoy re-telling stories where both parties get to make their case. Usually, not everything is as it seems with the title of villain and hero and/or hero is assigned. Thus, I would want to tell a story Rama, and his brother who knows magic for instance, are just about to kill an ogre when suddenly, the ogre gets to speak his peace. This could be the case for many of the monsters who would be slain by Rama and company. As the story unfolds, it could turn out that these monsters are simply the way that they are due to a higher power than all of them combined. Thus, they are not truly evil, they are just taking orders. As Rama continuously finds this to be case he learns to listen and be better leader. He begins to work with the monster...
