Introduction

Introduction to a Future Med Student

My name is Ruben Delacruz and my major is Biochemistry. The most exciting things about my major is that I feel like I will have the opportunity to utilize all the courses that I have taken here at OU in my future occupation. My favorite course last semester was Genetics with Dr. Durica, I really enjoyed myself and I am considering doing some research in that field and my biggest accomplishment last semester was doing well on my MCAT exam. Over the summer, I went to Destin with my family during a short summer intermission I had from Biochemistry with Dr. Najar. Despite the ill preparation for the humidity, it went really well. Furthermore, anyone who knows me knows that I am obsessed with the TV series ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ I practically watch it every day. Moreover, I am very eclectic with my music choices. I play guitar, piano and have composed two albums. In fact, while I love Biology, music is my life’s first passion. Also, I am a very avid reader with a slight caveat. If it’s my choice, I only read non-fiction, which is a little interesting with respect to this course. Not to be confused, I do enjoy fiction, I simply never find myself electing to read it of my own accord. In closing, I have many life goals, I have made a sport out of traveling. In fact, my best friends and I are currently closing in on visiting 22 of the 50 states together. Hopefully, we will throw a few countries in there before too long. Further, I recently found out that I will most likely be moving away to attend medical school which is a long-term goal I set forth many years ago. Thus, I hope to become the best physician that I can be while also maintaining a role of an accountable friend/family member and integral piece of the community. In addition to completing school, my ultimate goal is to become employed in my hometown of Tulsa, so that I can reunite with my friends and family.  Last, my hobbies include creating music, playing sports, traveling, cooking and spending time with friends and family (especially now that I might be moving away for medical school :( ).

  1. Hi Ruben, and thanks for posting your Introduction! One of the best things about teaching a Gen. Ed. class like this is meeting students from all the different colleges and majors at OU; I'm not sure if there are any other biochemistry majors in this class, but there are certainly some future medical professionals. And about HIMYM, you are not alone in being a fan of that show: it has inspired a couple of projects in this class in fact: Barney's Blog: How to Be Awesome and How I Met Your Mother. Maybe you will also want to do a HIMYM project too! You can take a look at those and see what you think. The plots and characters of the epics are often totally new to people in this class, so hooking them up with a TV show or movie or book that you already know is a great way to get connected and start to feel comfortable with the new stories. I hope you will have fun with it!

  2. Hi Ruben,

That is awesome that you are a Biochemistry major! Also the genetics course you took sounds really interesting. I wish I would have majored in something like that, but science and math is not something that comes easily to me. I am similar as I enjoy fiction books, but never end up reading them. I have a short attention span, and am not always the best when trying to read books.

  3. Hey Ruben! That's awesome and full congrats on passing your MCAT and getting into med-school!! Definitely a challenging path to take, at least in my mind. A few of my cousins are in med-school and pushing through! Which school did you get accepted to, if you don't mind me asking? Genetics is a really intriguing topic and would be really amazing if you ended up studying that sometime after you were done with med-school or even during. I'm not quite sure how that works. I love 'How I Met Your Mother' as well! Although I only watch it sporadically, so I have yet to watch it in order. Though I'm not so great with instruments, I do love listening to music and going to concerts; they're so much fun! I love to travel as well, but I haven't visited as many states as you have and hope to do that someday myself! Good luck on your future endeavors with med-school, and the rest of the semester! Congratulations, again!

  4. Hey Ruben! Congratulations on doing well on your MCAT and your med school admission! I am headed on that path too, so I know how difficult that must have been. Fun fact: I also took biochemistry with Dr. Najar this past summer! What. A. Class. Man.

I also LOOOOVE How I Met Your Mother. By far one of the funniest shows ever.
And I think it's super interesting that you play instruments and have even composed two albums! Wow! That's so great.

You and your friends are doing such a cool things too, travelling all over the nation! that's something I would love to do one day, and I'm glad you are doing it before med school takes over haha :-)

  5. Hi Ruben!
From the start congrats on getting into med school! I can imagine the stress is nerve racking, but you can now finally close that chapter of worry. I also find it interesting that you play not only the guitar but also the piano. Music is something that I also hold very dearly to my heart and I am glad that you are still able to connect to that side of you even with all the work that comes with med-school. I wish you the best of luck at your future school, the future, and your remaining time here at OU!

  6. Hey there Ruben! I thought that I would go into the medical field for a while, but then decided against it. But, congrats on the MCAT! That must feel so great to have that out of the way. Having medical school planned out is a big obstacle that I know a lot of people have to go through. I also wish to travel to many different places. I haven't been to too many places in America and only out of the country once! So hopefully, we can both fulfill our wishes of traveling!

  7. Rueben, it sounds like you have a lot of upcoming opportunity in your life and that is something everyone strives for. It also sounds like you are a very well rounded individual between all your different talents and abilities. I love traveling just like you do but do not think I have made it to as many states as you, hopefully I can catch up with my last couple years of school. Tulsa is a great town and I hope you are able to make it back their to work one day. Good luck with your future in business and hope you enjoy this class as well.

  8. Hey Ruben! We have a lot of similarities you know. I too love to travel: I went to NYC, Athens, and London this summer. Like you said, its a sport. I love to travel, but honestly hate airlines. I also find myself re-watching HIMYM every year with friends. I don't however, play any instruments. I think it's cool that you've already been recorded. Even more so is your distinction between music as your passion, and medical school as a goal. I find that very balanced! Good luck with everything!

  9. Hi Ruben!
It’s great to meet you! I really enjoyed reading your introduction. I’m also planning on going to medical school and I have been studying for the MCAT this summer too. Also, I’m obsessed with How I Met Your Mother. I only recently was introduced to it by one of my good friends and ever since then I’ve been hooked. I hope you are having a good semester so far and good luck on the MCAT and applying to medical school!

  10. Hi Ruben!
It's lovely to meet you! I think it's wonderful that you get to go explore as you attend medical school. I also think it's so cool that you want to move back home to start work. I think it's so important to give back to our communities. Family is really important to me as well. And I love travelling too! It's always so great to see new places and eat new foods, especially if you can do it with friends or family. I know when I was studying abroad, I was constantly wishing that my family could experience all the fun I was having with me. Good luck on med school, and on being an awesome doctor!

  11. Hey Ruben!

I liked your introduction, it seems like you have a lot of varied interests. I'm curious, what type of Non-fiction do you like reading most? I don't read as much as I used to (or should) but when I was reading a lot, I also found myself drawn toward ancient Roman nonfiction, or nonfiction about the founding of America and it's leaders. But most of all, I loved to read everything about past wars, modern and ancient. If you haven't delved into these subjects much, I would definitely recommend it! I look forward to reading more from you.

  12. Hello Ruben ! Congrats on doing so well on your MCAT! I know that was a relief for you! I am in the middle of preparing for my PCAT and it is quite stressful so I could only imagine how you felt after taking you MCAT and doing so well! Also, it is great that you and your family was able to go on a summer vacation together. That is always important. Guess What?! I also was in Najars Bio-Chem Class this summer! Yay for passing it! Lol! I also went on a mini vacation afterwards with my family. Well actually I just went back home to Louisiana but that is always a vacation to me!

  13. Hey Ruben! It's so cool that you've set some ambitious goals for yourself, and even better that you're fulfilling them! Traveling sounds like so much fun! I'm glad you have a great support system and a good number of hobbies as well. It sounds like you lead a pretty exciting life, and I'm sure you will continue to do so. I'm super impressed with all of the plans you have in front of you, and I just wish I got to do things half as exciting, haha!

  14. Hi there Ruben! It is so nice to meet ya!
Well, biochemistry! That is a doozie but honestly I am so jealous of you! STEM research has always been so fascinating in my eyes, and the commitment to how much time you spend in a lab. However, it is so important! It's an extremely noble thing to do! Good luck with everything!

  15. Hi Ruben!

I have no clue how this is the first time I'm coming across your intro in this class. The semester is almost over, woohoo! You watch HIMYM everyday.... and I watch HIMYM everyday so right there tells me that we have a very important common denominator. I think we'd get a long just nicely. I wish you the best of luck with your future goals and with med school!
